While we anxiously await the custom glass installation that will complete the retail space storefront, the renovation of the 116-unit Briggs Houze is coming together. The transformation of the former Hotel Briggs is really something you have to see to appreciate. You’re in luck! Check out how these units went from grit to glamour:

435 sq ft of everything a young professional would need. It’s bright. It’s functional. Where do I sign?

If you’d like a dedicated bedroom, you’ll get around 200 more sq ft and a half bath for guests. The full bath is attached to the bedroom.

When I first saw the bathroom, my eyes were drawn to the subway tiled walls and hexagon floor. I assumed it was new tile that was made to look weathered. In my head I began applauding the reno team for their efforts in keeping with the historic vibe of the building. “Nope, that’s original,” said Anthony Ghannam, Senior Project Superintendent. After picking my jaw up from the floor I admired the absolute beauty of the authentic materials. Missing and damaged pieces called for some new tile to be woven in. Even the bathtubs were saved by being reglazed.

As much as I love original features, I can’t help but appreciate the modern luxury items we have today. Check out the full length shower head – definitely something that wasn’t available when this building was constructed in the 1920s. What a great way to relax after a night out in the D!

Baseboard trim made from a mold

Loads of original features remain throughout the building.  A mold of the original baseboards was made when the team needed extra material to cover areas that had missing or damaged pieces. Similarly, a mold was made from the original plaster crown molding in the lobby. A small linen closet door in each “hotel room” is now integrated as part of the wall that makes up a much larger laundry room.

Upcoming retail space

We’re hoping these renovations are just a taste of what’s to come in the retail space. The former

lobby of the Oriental Theatre boasts a 35 foot ceiling and a ridiculous amount of character. We’ll be keeping an eye out as work begins in the last piece of the puzzle for this project.
